Background of the study
The provision of school health services is a fundamental aspect of ensuring that students maintain optimal physical and mental well-being, which in turn supports academic achievement. In Nasarawa LGA, Nasarawa State, secondary schools have increasingly recognized the need to integrate health services within their operational framework. These services range from routine health check-ups, vaccination programs, and first aid facilities to mental health counseling and nutritional guidance (Ola, 2023). The holistic approach to student health has been linked to improved classroom attendance and enhanced concentration levels, thereby positively affecting academic performance (Ibrahim, 2024). However, despite these potential benefits, several challenges remain. In many schools, the inadequacy of health infrastructure, a shortage of qualified health personnel, and limited funding have hindered the optimal delivery of these services. Moreover, there is an observable disparity between schools in urban and rural settings, with those in less urbanized areas facing more significant obstacles in accessing quality health services. Studies have shown that comprehensive school health programs can lead to a reduction in common illnesses and better management of chronic conditions, which are critical for sustained student performance (Musa, 2025). In addition, the integration of mental health services has become increasingly important, as stress, anxiety, and other psychological issues are now recognized as key factors influencing students’ academic progress. The adoption of health education curricula also plays a vital role in equipping students with knowledge about personal hygiene, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices. These elements not only improve immediate well-being but also have long-term benefits for academic and personal development. However, in Nasarawa LGA, the implementation of such services is still at a developmental stage. There is a pressing need to evaluate how well these services are being delivered and to identify gaps that may be limiting their effectiveness. The study will thus explore the relationship between the availability of school health services and the overall well-being of students, considering both physical and mental health aspects. By addressing these issues, the research aims to provide recommendations that could lead to enhanced service delivery, ultimately fostering a healthier, more conducive learning environment (Ola, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of comprehensive school health services, secondary schools in Nasarawa LGA continue to face several challenges in delivering these services effectively. Many schools are plagued by insufficient health facilities, limited availability of medical professionals, and a lack of proper funding, which collectively hinder the provision of regular health check-ups and timely medical interventions. This inadequacy not only compromises the physical well-being of students but also contributes to higher levels of stress and absenteeism, thereby negatively impacting academic performance (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the disparity in service delivery between well-funded urban schools and their rural counterparts has led to inequitable health outcomes among students. Inadequate mental health support, in particular, has emerged as a significant concern, as many students experience anxiety and depression without access to professional counseling. The fragmented approach to integrating health services with academic objectives further exacerbates these issues, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of how health services directly influence student performance. There is a dearth of localized research that investigates the effectiveness of these services within the specific context of Nasarawa LGA, making it difficult to develop tailored intervention strategies. This study aims to bridge that gap by systematically examining the current state of school health services and their impact on student well-being. It will assess whether the existing services meet the health needs of students and identify key barriers to effective service delivery. By doing so, the research intends to provide actionable recommendations that can help improve the quality and accessibility of school health services, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive both academically and physically (Musa, 2025).

How do school health services influence students’ physical and mental well-being?
What measures can be adopted to improve the effectiveness of these health services?
Research Hypotheses
H₁: There is a significant positive correlation between the availability of school health services and improved student well-being.
H₂: Students with access to comprehensive health services demonstrate better academic performance than those without such access.
H₃: Enhanced training and resource allocation for school health services will lead to improved health outcomes and academic success.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the crucial role of school health services in shaping student well-being and academic performance. Its findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, school administrators, and health professionals, enabling them to design more effective health programs that address both physical and mental health needs. Ultimately, improved health services will lead to a more supportive educational environment and better academic outcomes for students in Nasarawa LGA.
Scope and limitations of the study
This research is confined to assessing the influence of school health services on students’ well-being in secondary schools within Nasarawa LGA, Nasarawa State. It focuses solely on the existing health service infrastructure and its direct impact on student health and academic performance, without extending to external healthcare facilities or broader regional comparisons.
